river sky

riversky

river sky is it too much to ask that you stay awhile

winter has been so dark and lonely and i miss seeing your clouds

as they dance along the river carrying the day away to a distant sea

river sky just stay awhile and if you must leave

then take me with you to the sea… please take me with you to the sea

From the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico via the Mississippi River, the Illinois Waterway is a marvel of engineering and commerce. This is Lock and Dam No. 6 and is in the National Register of Historic Places. And that’s now more than you ever wanted to know about this particular location 🙂  Taken from one of the beautiful hiking trails at Starved Rock State Park.

devil’s doorway

Devil's Doorway

Since my last two posts had us visiting Devil’s Lake State Park in Wisconsin, thought we would explore a bit. The rock formation pictured here is known as Devil’s Doorway. The geological features of the park are really a delight and easy to enjoy: quartzite bluffs, hiking trails, rock climbing, forests, and, the  lake all make up for a beautiful setting to enjoy the outdoors. My goodness! I sound like a commercial for the Wisconsin Department of Tourism!

I think I just created a new word! Taken at the Illinois River in Morris. I changed the background so you can see the entire image. Hope you have a great week!

signs of spring?

signs of spring?

Taken this week at a park along the Illinois River. It was a cold, but sunny day, so off I went on my favorite activity: riding and taking pictures. Somewhere in this world there is a Spring looking for the Chicago area. To that Spring I say, “WE ARE HERE!”

The I & M Canal Tow Path. I guess I was in a “dreamy” mood. Hope you enjoy.

abandoned

abandoned

i suppose
it was all in my head
but then again
isn’t it always
assumptions
take root
and a heart soars
it was a
rough landing
never saw it coming
can’t we…
     …just wait…
          …please…
               …abandoned…

a winter ride

a winter ride

This week we had a couple of days above freezing so the roads cleared up enough to go on my first bike ride of 2014. Passed this scene on my way home. Looking forward to warmer days!

…like a bridge over troubled waters….

like a bridge over troubled waters

Winter marches on… but that’s not to say that we have not had some beautiful days. This bitterly cold day was filled with gleaming, white sunshine, and the beauty of the Illinois River at Marseilles.

We are having a very cold and snowy winter in the Midwest, but my youngest son and I went out for a winter expedition after the snow storm, and, before the temperatures plummeted – it is now -15 Fahrenheit. It was absolutely beautiful.
