jones beach water tower 2

And just before you head out to enjoy your weekend, another shot of the Jones Beach Water Tower. I have a few more images coming from my trip back home this past January. The Art Deco style of this tower (this 84 year old beauty is an actual functioning water tower) is representative of the bath houses and other structures in this beautiful state park.

The Jones Beach Boardwalk still manages to charm after all these years. If you have been around my blog at all you know about my love for the shore, and especially, the beaches at Jones Beach and Robert Moses. When I smell the salty air, walk on the sand and boardwalk, and put my feet in the water (which I did when this was taken on a cold day in January), I am taken back to so many moments spent on these shores…..  I remember clinging to my dad, laughing and frightened all at once, while he fulfilled my request to take me out into the sea. I would hold on tighter and tighter as each Atlantic wave approached, thinking for sure we would be knocked down, but my dad just stood there…against that BIG ocean…to me he was the most powerful man in the world. To this day, in so many ways, he is.

have you seen my tauntaun?

have you seen my tauntaun?

Most of the Chicago area was transformed into the ice planet Hoth this winter. Tauntauns would have been helpful…. except for the smell. This was taken at Robert Moses State Park, on Long Island in New York. (No Tauntauns were harmed in the taking and processing of this photograph.)

9 11 memorial at eisenhower park

On my recent trip to Long Island I went to Eisenhower Park and had fun remembering being a kid in this beautiful place. The park features a somber memorial to 9/11. On September 9, 2007, Nassau County unveiled the 9/11 Memorial honoring the 344 Nassau County residents who lost their lives during the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center. The monument is one of the largest completed memorials to the victims of the 9/11 attacks.

During my recent trip to New York, specifically, my hometown of East Meadow, on Long Island, I took some time to visit Eisenhower Park. When I was growing up this was known as Salisbury Park, named after the country club that owned the property. This park is actually larger than Central Park in Manhattan. There is a beautiful Veterans Memorial in the park where I took this picture.

I think this structure was the place to rent umbrellas. Taken on a cold January day, so, no umbrella required. Jones Beach, NY.

This has been a wonderful week loving on my elderly parents, laughing with my siblings, and walking along the shore during this trip to my home town: East Meadow, NY. So grateful to take home some new memories… grateful for family, friends, and, this beautiful world…

the beautiful shore

the beautiful shore

A long time ago I decided to stop trying to understand why I love the southern shore of Long Island so much; particularly Jones Beach and Robert Moses. I simply enjoy the sense of peace, wonder and smallness that walking along these beautiful beaches bring to my soul. Add to that, the fond childhood and high school sweetheart memories, and I remain – always –  so glad to be back “home” along the shore…
