Before we leave the historic Plaza Colon, we will take some time to enjoy this young lady having fun with some other guests of the plaza. Don’t worry, we’ll be paying some more visits to Puerto Rico!
Our Lady of the Candelaria Cathedral or (Spanish) Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria is the cathedral for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mayagüez located in the eastern end of the Colón Main Square facing the town hall in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. It is a beautiful house of worship. I love the plaza “concept”: church and government joined by an open area. I can just imagine, in days past, church and civic leaders having conversations and working together to serve the community. Both the spiritual and civic community should complement one another, and, certainly have the potential to have a social/societal as well as individual/transformational impact for justice and service. Continuing our visit to Plaza Colon in Mayaguez, PR, here is a shot of the Mayaguez Town Hall “grand staircase”. I am not quite sure that the locals call it the “grand staircase”, but, I have decided to give it that name. I love the black and white tile flooring! This building sits on one side of the Plaza, and a cathedral sits on the other. You can see the cathedral in the background in this post. I will be posting an interior image of the cathedral soon.
