the end

the end

This is just a 2 minute walk from my house. Our subdivision is on the edge of, well… let’s put it this way: on a clear day I can see Iowa, and on a really clear day I can see Los Angeles! ๐Ÿ™‚ ย It has taken me some time to enjoy the Mid-West geography, but, an end to the day like this makes it a bit easier.

the meeting of the gulls

the meeting of the gulls

Stumbled upon this high level meeting of the gulls. Among the topics I heard discussed: the problem of high property taxes; the awful smell of sun tan lotion; the dreaded return of sea doos and boats; those darn geese think they own the beach; let’s get that idiot with the camera. That’s when I ran.

montana moment3

montana moment3

This was taken one morning at Beartooth Mountain Christian Ranch, Fishtail, Montana. For the past two summers I have been a part of a team that has gone to this ranch to help with Camp Velocity: a 5 day camp for children in the foster care system of Montana. Due to my oldest daughter’s wedding and a missions trip with our church’sย high school students I am sad to not be able to return this summer. I will miss loving on those kids, and the beauty of Montana.

Taken on Lake Michigan from the beach at New Buffalo, MI. I think I remember shouting from the shore, “HAVE YOU SEEN THE WHITE WHALE?” ย ๐Ÿ™‚

a determined tree

a determined tree

To me, this tree looks like it could just pick upย those roots – a.k.a., tentacles; a.k.a., legs – and just go exploring.

river sky

riversky

river sky is it too much to ask that you stay awhile

winter has been so dark and lonely and i miss seeing your clouds

as they dance along the river carrying the day away to a distant sea

river sky just stay awhile and if you must leave

then take me with you to the sea… please take me with you to the sea

Spring is in a titanic struggle with Winter…cold days, then a warm day, then back to cold. This was taken on a cool day on my way back from a long ride. You can do it Spring!

when winter goes

when winter goes

In celebration of the end of winter (he said with great hope!) here is another picture taken at Matthiessen State Park when I was there a few weeks ago with my son and his buddies. We had a great time exploring these falls, and, considering where the boys climbed and explored, lets just say it’s a good thing that no moms were present!

locks at starved rock

locks at starved rock

From the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico via the Mississippi River, the Illinois Waterway is a marvel of engineering and commerce. This is Lock and Dam No. 6 and is in the National Register of Historic Places. And that’s now more than you ever wanted to know about this particular location ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Taken from one of the beautiful hiking trails at Starved Rock State Park.

devil’s doorway

Devil's Doorway

Since my last two posts had us visiting Devil’s Lake State Park in Wisconsin, thought we would explore a bit. The rock formation pictured here is known as Devil’s Doorway. The geological features of the park are really a delight and easy to enjoy: quartzite bluffs, hiking trails, rock climbing, forests, and, theย  lake all make up for a beautiful setting to enjoy the outdoors. My goodness! I sound like a commercial for the Wisconsin Department of Tourism!
