great day for a hike

We moved to our current home in Illinois from Michigan back in 2004, but it’s not the first time we have lived in Illinois. We first arrived in Chicago-land back in 1988. However, it wasn’t until we came back in 2004 that we discovered Matthiessen State Park.

The day started out with the typical refrain of cold, low, gray clouds, but Mr. I-Can’t-Seem-To-Get-The-Weather-Report-Right promised clearing skies and it came to pass that a beautiful, mostly sunny afternoon emerged.

One of the things I love about each of the it-feels-like-hundreds-of-times that I have visited this park is that it is always new. It’s like discovering and exploring for the first time, each time.

And I love the quiet… the sense of calm…

I am glad I made time to reflect… walk… listen to a waterfall, or the water gurgling over rocks and a stubborn oak leaf…

Thanks for stopping by.

galena time

Galena, Illinois was “born” in 1826. It is known as the town that time forgot. This beautiful town is filled with shops, candy, lots of chocolate, delicious coffee, great eateries and, apparently, ghosts! This is my bride, and we enjoyed celebrating 39 years together in Galena!

He is here

stillness
reflection
quiet
contemplation
listen
He is here

presence
surrender
holy
encounter
He is here

searching
heart open
hope filled
and broken
He is here

rest now
oh my soul
let grace fill
the questions
the doubts
have no fear
His love is here

He is here

dwight correctional center

On a recent motorcycle ride I went past this property, and because I love old, abandoned structures, it caught my eye, and I decided that I was going to return, so, I did. This was the Dwight Correctional Center, located just west of Dwight, Illinois. It was the state’s only Level One maximum-security adult female facility. It was opened in 1930 and closed in 2013. The buildings are beautiful, in a sad way, and I will return to further explore this 160 acre location.

the beauty of the ‘nook

The ‘nook is short for my home town, Minooka, Illinois. We ended Monday night with a rainbow and beautiful sunset – both taken from my front porch. The cactus flower is in the garden in front of our house. The sunrise is just a 2 minute walk from my home. What does the beauty around your home look like?
